  1. 01

    Experienced English-speaking local naturalists.

Years on the Chambal. Not a boat ride — naturalists who can read the water, the sandbanks and the birds working the current, and explain it in plain English.

  2. 02

    Private boat safaris, never shared.

Your own boat, at your own pace. Wait where the gharial are hauled out, drift where the skimmers are fishing — never rushed through on a fixed group run.

  3. 03

No surprises — everything as agreed.

Meeting point, timing, the river stretch, transfers and costs settled before you arrive. Every motorboat is checked, and life jackets are worn at all times on the water.

  4. 04

Preferred rates from our trusted Agra hotels.

Comfortable, well-run properties in Agra we have personally tested — so the river pairs easily with the Taj, booked at rates our partnerships unlock.

We've just returned from a truly magical day on the Chambal River with Kunal, and cannot recommend his river safari highly enough. Exploring the once-legendary badlands of the Chambal is a completely unique experience — in fact, in the 25 years I've lived in India, I have never been anywhere quite like it. The Chambal's former reputation as a bandit stronghold kept tourism at bay for decades. Ironically, this isolation helped preserve one of India's most remarkable and unspoilt wildlife habitats. Today, the river teems with life: we saw the extraordinary and endangered gharial and basking marsh crocodiles.

Safari on the Chambal River with Kunal was a highlight of my trip to India. Before the trip, we were going back and forth about booking it as it's an off-the-beaten-track, niche experience and we weren't sure what to expect. But we were convinced by all the amazing reviews — and it didn't disappoint! Kunal is an exceptional guide. On the way to the river, he explained the history of the region and facts about the species we might see. It was all really interesting and added to the understanding of the Sanctuary and its wildlife.

We took the Chambal river safari trip organised by Mr Sudhir Sharma of Cultural safari tours. We were picked up on time and dropped back to our hotel by Mr Somveer. Our guide for the trip was Mr Tomar and what an excellent experience it was! Two hours on the pristine Chambal river was an experience in itself. We saw many gharials, turtles and marsh crocodiles lazing on the rocks and riverbank in the sun. Mr Tomar also identified various birds for us and helped us take numerous pictures. The icing on the cake was seeing the male gharial and a skimmer bird skimming the river surface. Amazing experience to see crocodiles and various birds co-existing.

Things to know as you plan

Frequently asked questions.

  • The safari runs from October or November through to mid-April — the winter months, when the weather is pleasant and migratory birds are on the river. It stays open until June, though temperatures climb past 40°C, the upside being lower water levels that bring gharial, crocodiles and mammals into clearer view. The river is closed during the monsoon, July to September.

Winter mornings on the highway and river can be foggy, so we usually recommend staying overnight in Agra the night before.

  • Yes. The National Chambal Sanctuary is about an hour's drive from Agra, which makes the river an easy addition to a Taj Mahal or Golden Triangle trip. The safari itself takes five to six hours including travel, so it works comfortably as a day trip.

  • The Chambal is one of India's most alive river ecosystems. You have a strong chance of the critically endangered gharial, mugger crocodiles, the Gangetic river dolphin, and eight species of turtle including the red-crowned roofed turtle. Birdlife is exceptional — Indian skimmers, black-bellied terns, Bonelli's eagle, spoonbills and wintering ducks and geese — with striped hyena, jackal, jungle cat and desert fox in the ravines. Sightings are never guaranteed; the river is their habitat and depends on water levels and conditions.
