There was an extended holiday and the itinerary to Sasan Gir fell on my friends' lap, and we three moms with kids decided to say yes. To be very honest I was a bit sceptical of safaris as I never had luck to see animals beyond deer, but we ventured into the adventure for a weekend break. The whole trip was well arranged, including transportation from the airport to Anil Farm Resort, which was again a well thought-out suggestion given we needed three rooms.

This was an excellent one-of-its-kind experience that we had on the Gir trip. With Kunal to guide and help us with everything around, we thoroughly enjoyed our first ever group picnic! The stay facilities and the forest trip arrangements were very seamlessly managed by Kunal. His detailed knowledge of the nature around us was amazing, and his connect with the children in our group was heartwarming. We came back with fond memories and are already looking forward to our next trip with Kunal.

Things to know as you plan

Frequently asked questions.

  • Gir safaris are ideal from November to May, when the forest is dry and visibility is clear. Summer (mid-April to mid-June) is hot but can also be very rewarding, as many animals crowd around the last remaining water bodies.

The park closes for the monsoon from mid-June, and the best winter dates fill early.

  • Always private. You have your own jeep, your own driver and your own naturalist, with permits and zone allocations arranged in advance so your time is spent in the forest rather than in the queue at Sasan.

  • Asiatic lions, like their African cousins, are almost always found in a pride. As such, tracking them is relatively easier than tracking down a solitary tiger or leopard. Apart from lions, Gir is also famous for leopards, hyenas and the jungle cat.
