One of India's great conservation comebacks — Vindhyan gorges, the Ken River, and safaris timed around a forest that had to be rebuilt.

Panna's safari permits are limited and often need booking two to three months in advance, so it's worth planning early.

We were hoping to spot tigers and do some good birding, and Kunal recommended Panna Tiger Reserve, arranging three safaris for us. He organized an extremely experienced guide who knew exactly where to go and had deep knowledge of the park's flora and fauna. We saw four tigers in just three safaris. One particularly memorable moment was during our last safari — we were the only vehicle to spot P243 in dense fog, which made the sighting even more special. What really set this experience apart was that our guide didn't just focus on tiger sightings; he patiently explored the park with us.

We began chatting with Kunal via WhatsApp several months before our trip. What started as an interest in the Chambal River Cruise became Kunal organising our entire trip! We enjoyed excellent guiding in Delhi and Old Delhi, journeyed to Agra for the Chambal River Cruise and Taj Mahal, then flew down to Khajuraho and took part in several tiger safaris in Panna Tiger Reserve, finishing with a temple tour. Kunal organised all the transfers, guides and accommodation, and every element was of the highest standard. We saw so many animals and birds (and tigers!) and learnt so much from all the expert guides.

Travel With organized a fantastic trip for our family of four to Panna National Park and Khajuraho — everything was very smooth! The drivers were on time and courteous, and the Khajuraho guide was definitely a subject matter expert. He kept the temple tour engaging for both the adults and teenagers. Our guide in Panna was so knowledgeable and really made our safaris special — you could tell the other guides were just chasing the tigers, while he knew where they would go and could position our jeep for some really amazing viewing.

Things to know as you plan

Frequently asked questions.

  • Panna is open October to June. The cool winter months (November to February) are best for birding, when Himalayan and cinereous vultures arrive; the hot months of March to June concentrate wildlife around water and are the most reliable for tigers. Summer also brings the Indian pitta and paradise flycatcher.

Panna's safari permits are limited and often need booking two to three months in advance.

  • Always private — your own jeep, your own driver and your own naturalist. Panna also offers night safaris in the buffer zones (roughly 7 to 9 pm), a rare chance to see sloth bear, leopard, honey badger and pangolin after dark.

  • At the turn of the millennium Panna had lost virtually all its tigers to poaching — guides would discourage safaris, saying there was nothing to see but monkeys, peacocks and deer. A determined conservation effort, including translocating tigers from other reserves, brought them back; today the park holds more than eighty. It is one of India's great comeback stories.
