“Travel With company and its head Kunal is the best tour operator in India, my family is absolutely sure of it. In July of this year, he organized a wonderful tour of Ladakh for us. And we had something to compare it with, because before that we went to Kashmir, where we planned a trip ourselves and through other people, and the difference turned out to be significant. “Kunal arranged a thoughtful itinerary for my family and was extremely patient with the itinerary changes requested. Had to postpone the trip due to COVID, and he was more than accommodating. The driver and car provided during the nine days in Ladakh were fabulous. The driver Dorjey was one of the best and safest drivers we have had. Also was extremely helpful and patient especially since we had a last minute change of plans due to sickness. “I went to Ladakh because I wanted to hike the high mountains, explore Tibetan Buddhism, and experience ancient cultures of India, Tibet, and Baltistan. My favorite memories include: 1) taking a midnight hike along the Pangong Lake (elevation 13,930 ft) surrounded by stars, clouds, and mountains. 2) Trying Balti foods at a garden-to-table restaurant in Turtuk (elevation 9,846 ft) — Balti Kitchen: buckwheat pancakes, walnut dumplings, fresh apricots, and more. 3) Driving through the Ladakh Ranges (elevation 17,688 ft) by the raging glacial rivers of Indus, Zanskar, Shyok, and Nubra. 4) Exploring Ladakh culture at home-made momos in the peaceful village of Hemis Shukpachan (elevation 12,191 ft). For the classic summer holiday — monasteries, Pangong, Nubra and Turtuk — May to September is the season, when the passes are open. For the snow leopard and winter wildlife, the cold months of January to March are the time, though conditions are demanding.
Whichever season, build in two full days at altitude to acclimatise before going higher.
Leh sits at around 3,500m and the passes climb far higher, so we plan two full, gentle days on arrival before any high-altitude travel. It's the single most important part of a comfortable, safe Ladakh trip.
It can be either. Summer is largely landscape and culture — monasteries, lakes, dunes and villages — while winter is a dedicated wildlife expedition for the snow leopard and Himalayan fauna. We tailor the trip to what you're after.
